I can almost guarantee that if you are looking to get fit, or want to start fitness training just for the fun of it, you will know somebody else who wants to do the same. Having a training partner can be a huge advantage, especially for those that find it hard to motivate themselves. As someone that has no choice but to train by himself sometimes, there is no doubt in my mind that both quality and level of enjoyment go up when you have a mate going through the pain as well.
When you exercise by yourself, you can do it at any time. You probably think that is a good thing and while it can be, it actually means you are likely to push it back and back until you cannot be bothered to train. When you train with a friend you both set a time and you have to go because else you are leaving them by themselves. Even when you do not really feel like doing anything, they can be the motivation to leave the house.
You can go one step further and join a sports club, this is arguably even better. Admittedly there is normally a charge for something like this and it is not always cheap. However if you do not mind putting the money in then you can get some real gain out of a big group of people. With all sorts of personalities buzzing around you are likely to find motivation from some of the other members and in big group you are likely to find someone at your level which will normally make you work harder. I train at a local athletics club and when I have a training partner with me my three mile runs normally end up about a minute quicker, than if I was to do them by myself.
Having somebody with you during a session normally makes it more enjoyable as well. They can be somebody to talk to and have a laugh with. Many sports clubs are run for social reasons as much as fitness reasons; a place to catch up and have a chat before you do the hard work. Also if you are the competitive type it can be enjoyable to try and out-do your peers.
A training partner can be anyone from a friend to a mum, some people might even join in just because you want to start, so you are actually being the motivator to getting them fit, which is a great thing. If you want to make exercise less of a burden and more of an enjoyable activity, or if you just want to make it more productive go and find someone to work hard with!
